Your cover letter should complement your CV, while providing an opportunity for you to tell your potential future employer why you are the best person for the job. It is a way for you to introduce yourself and to encourage them to read your CV.

• Although your CV can be slightly amended for each different advert you apply to, your covering letter must be completely re-written for each new person you send it to.
• It must be relevant for the particular job and the company - do your research.
• Read the job specification carefully to ensure you mention how your skills and experiences meet the requirements for the post. Pay particular attention to the requirements that the company classify as most important.
• State why you are applying and why you think you would be the best person for the job.
• Clearly identify the post (and if applicable, the reference number) that you are applying for.
• Make sure there are no spelling or grammatical errors.
• Ideally find out the name of the person who is managing the recruitment process and address the letter to him/her.
• Do not make the letter too lengthy.
• Make sure it looks professional by printing it out on a word processor on good quality
  plain white paper.
